What Can Acupuncture Treat?
Many people choose acupuncture to help manage a wide range of health conditions, particularly those involving pain. It is commonly used to support people experiencing:
- Headaches and migraines
- Neck and back pain
- Osteoarthritis, including knee pain
- Jaw pain (temporomandibular joint disorders)
- Muscle tension and sports injuries
Clinical research has shown that acupuncture can help relieve symptoms for many people, particularly in the short term, with some studies demonstrating benefits lasting for up to a year for certain chronic pain conditions.
Acupuncture is designed to treat the whole person, not just individual symptoms. As treatment progresses, many patients also report improvements in areas such as sleep, stress, energy levels and overall wellbeing. Some people seek acupuncture simply because they feel out of balance, even without a specific medical diagnosis.
Many patients continue with occasional maintenance or “top-up” treatments to help maintain their wellbeing, while others use acupuncture as part of a long-term management plan to help reduce the frequency of recurring conditions, such as migraines.
Another advantage of acupuncture is that it can usually be used alongside conventional medical treatments and prescribed medication, making it a complementary therapy for many people.
Evidence-Based Treatment
Research into acupuncture has grown significantly over recent years, particularly for chronic pain. High-quality clinical studies have demonstrated that acupuncture can provide meaningful benefits for a number of conditions and is recognised as more than a placebo effect.
While evidence is strongest for certain pain-related conditions, research into many other health conditions is ongoing. As with any treatment, effectiveness can vary depending on the individual and the condition being treated.
National Guidance
Acupuncture is recognised within several UK clinical guidelines, including recommendations from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for selected conditions such as:
- Chronic primary pain
- Headaches and migraines
The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) also includes acupuncture within its guidance for conditions including:
- Lower back pain
- Osteoarthritis
